Mary Elizabeth (Vice) Wolfe
1925-2020
Mary Wolfe was born on a farm in Bath County, Kentucky on February 12, 1925. At age 20, she returned home when her mother passed away suddenly. Mary helped raise the eight younger brothers and sisters still at home and became the chief breadwinner for the family. She was elected the union representitive at the Cowden factory, where we sewed overalls. She met her future husband, Jim Wolfe, at a Kentucky Labor Federation Convention.
The couple moved to Cincinnati in 1958 and chose the diverse community of Kennedy Heights to call home for the rest of their lives. In the early 1960s, Mary and Jim were instrumental in building the Kennedy Heights Community Council and reminded active in the community. Mary volunteered at the Kennedy Heights Co-Op Pre-School, Kennedy Elementary and the fledgling School for the Creative and Performing Arts.
After Jim's passing in 1994, she continued her hospitality with her house remaining a popular request for the Progressive Dinner community fundraiser. In her later years when Mary could no longer walk, she held court from her second floor window. This continued until her passing, as the feeble fingers on her left hand gave a tiny wave, accompanied by a slight smile to neighbors on their daily walks.
Mary is survived by her siblings: James Vice, Helen Shigley (Bob), Charles Vice (Charlene), Cliff Vice, her children: Melissa McNally (Tom) and Kevin Wolfe, her grandsons: Tristan Wolfe (Christa) and Clif Wolfe.
At the request of the family, burial will be private.
Mary's story is available on her Facebook remembrance page, where those interested may also make a donation to her favorite charity, the Caring Place.
